Customer Frequently Asked Questions

Our answers to the most commonly asked questions when scrapping metal.

If you’re bringing in metal parts from a vehicle you own, you generally don’t need specific documentation for individual parts. However, if you’re scrapping an entire vehicle, you’ll need to provide the V5C registration document (log book), photo ID, and proof of address. This ensures we comply with environmental regulations and can properly process the vehicle’s end-of-life documentation.

We determine prices based on several factors: the type of metal, its grade and quality, current market rates, the quantity you’re bringing in, and how much processing is required. All material is accurately weighed on our calibrated weighbridge, ensuring you receive fair payment based on the actual weight. Our team is always transparent about our pricing structure and happy to explain the valuation of your specific materials.

Yes, we do offer preferential rates for both regular customers and those bringing in larger quantities of scrap metal. For businesses or individuals who regularly recycle with us, we can set up commercial accounts with competitive pricing structures. Similarly, bulk deliveries typically qualify for improved rates due to the efficiency of processing larger quantities at once. Please speak to our team about our volume-based pricing options.

To maximise the value of your scrap metal, we recommend:

  • Separating different types of metals where possible
  • Removing non-metal attachments or components
  • Cleaning off excessive dirt or non-metal materials
  • Removing any hazardous components
  • Draining fluids from any mechanical parts
  • Organizing similar items together

Pre-sorting your materials can often lead to better rates as it reduces our processing time and improves recycling efficiency.

We don’t have a strict minimum quantity for scrap metal brought directly to our yard. We welcome customers with both small and large amounts. However, for our collection service, we do require a minimum of 5 tonnes of material to make the collection economically viable. For smaller quantities, visiting our Alperton yard is the best option.

After purchase, we sort your scrap metal by type and grade. It then undergoes processing which may include crushing, shredding, or baling to prepare it for recycling facilities. From there, the processed metal is sent to specialized mills and foundries where it’s melted down and reformed into new products. This recycling process saves significant energy compared to mining and refining virgin materials, making your decision to recycle with us an environmentally responsible choice.

Yes, we can provide approximate quotes based on your description of the materials you have. However, final pricing will always depend on the actual weight and quality assessment once your scrap arrives at our yard. For more accurate pre-visit quotes, you can send us photos of your materials along with estimated quantities via email. For large commercial quantities, we can arrange for a representative to assess the materials on-site.

Absolutely! We regularly work with demolition contractors and construction companies to recycle metal waste from their projects. We can handle structural steel, rebar, metal roofing, pipes, wiring, and other construction-related metals. For large demolition projects, we can discuss collection options and may be able to provide skips or containers for convenient metal segregation on-site.

When handling scrap metal, we recommend:

  • Wearing thick gloves to protect against sharp edges
  • Using eye protection when breaking down materials
  • Wearing appropriate footwear with reinforced toes
  • Being cautious of heavy items and using proper lifting techniques
  • Ensuring all fluids are properly drained from mechanical parts
  • Avoiding contact with unknown substances or residues
  • Using appropriate tools rather than bare hands when separating materials

Your safety is important, so please take these precautions seriously when preparing and transporting your scrap metal.

Yes, scrap metal prices do fluctuate seasonally as well as with broader market conditions. Generally, prices can be higher during spring and summer months when construction and manufacturing activity increases. Winter sometimes sees slightly lower prices due to reduced demand. Additionally, global economic factors, trade policies, and manufacturing trends all impact pricing throughout the year. We always strive to offer the most competitive rates possible regardless of season.

In accordance with the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, we offer several electronic payment options:

  • Direct bank transfers (typically processed immediately)
  • Cheques
  • Debit card payments
  • Business-to-business payments for commercial accounts
  • Prepaid card loading options

All transactions create a clear audit trail as required by law, and we process payments promptly so you receive your funds without unnecessary delays.

Most customers complete the entire process within 15-20 minutes for standard loads. This includes weighing in, unloading materials, weighing out, and receiving payment. One of our main advantages is our efficient processing system that minimises waiting times. For larger commercial loads, the process may take a bit longer, but we pride ourselves on quick turnarounds even for substantial quantities.

Yes – at London Metal Recycling, we offer scrap metal collection services across Wembley, London, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire.

Ferrous metals are metals that contain iron as the main element. Some common examples of ferrous metals include steel, carbon steel, cast iron, and wrought iron. These metals are often used in construction, transportation, and manufacturing industries due to their strength, durability, and magnetic properties.

Non-ferrous metals, on the other hand, do not contain iron as the main element. Some common examples of non-ferrous metals include aluminium, copper, lead, zinc, nickel, and tin. These metals are often used in applications that require lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and non-magnetic materials, such as in electrical wiring, plumbing, and in the manufacturing of aircraft and automobiles.

Yes, we don’t accept fridges due to their hazardous components. We also don’t accept copper, lead, or brass as these require specific licensing for handling and processing.
