The ULEZ charge

The ULEZ Zone will cost £12.50 a day for people who drive a car, van or motorbike that doesn’t meet the latest emission standards.

How to see if your vehicle meets the ULEZ regulations

To check if your vehicle is ULEZ compliant and meets the emissions and safety standards required to drive in London, enter your vehicle registration plate here.

If your vehicle does meet the regulations, happy days. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to pay a daily or charge to drive within the zone, or use public transport, walk or cycle where possible rather than pay the charge.

Introducing the Scrappage Scheme

Since the ULEZ scheme has been announced by the London Mayor, many Londoners and opposing political parties have voiced their opinion to have the scheme withdrawn.

Although there is good intention behind the scheme (less pollution), the cost-of-living crisis and the economic uncertainty across the UK is already putting a strain on lots of people and their financial situation. The added cost of driving a vehicle into London that doesn’t meet the emission standards will add to the tough financial situation for many Londoners.

It’s also going to affect journey time and commuting for a lot of people too, as many will have to resort to public transport, walking or cycling to get to and from where they need to be in order to avoid the charge.

To help many Londoners transition from an older vehicle that doesn’t meet the new emissions standards to a newer vehicle that does, the Mayor of London has launched a new £110 scrappage scheme to help eligible Londoners on low-income or disability benefits apply for a grant to scrap their car, van or motorbike.

For cars, motorcycles and wheelchair-accessible cars or vans there are eight grant payment options:

    • Scrap a car – £2,000

    • Scrap a car – £1,600 plus one adult-rate Annual Bus & Tram Pass

    • Scrap a car – £1,200 plus two adult-rate Annual Bus & Tram Passes

    • Scrap a motorcycle – £1,000

    • Scrap a motorcycle – £600 plus one adult-rate Annual Bus & Tram Pass

    • Scrap a motorcycle – £200 plus two adult-rate Annual Bus & Tram Passes

    • Scrap a wheelchair accessible vehicle (car or van) – £5,000

Applicants must live within one of the 32 London boroughs or the City of London and receive one or more of the following benefits:

    • Universal Credit

    • Armed Forces Independence Payment

    • Attendance Allowance

    • Carer’s Allowance
